Darrell Gurr

Darrell Gurr

Services for Darrell Robert Gurr were held on Wednesday, May 22, 2013, at the Northern Nevada Veterans Cemetery in Fernley, NV.

Darrell ('That's two Rs, double L,' as he loved to say) was born in Los Angeles, CA, on August 3, 1946, and entered into Heaven on April 28, 2013.

He attended South Gate High School, where he played football and baseball. He served in the United States Navy and later the California Army National Guard in recruiting and as a maintenance officer.

He graduated from CSU Chico, where he earned a teaching credential in secondary education. No stranger to hard work, he installed cable on phone poles, pulled green chain at lumber mills and used his welding and electronics skills to help others.

Darrell loved his country and was active in politics.

Many family members and friends are left to mourn his passing, including his wife, Ora Lee Gurr of Fernley; daughter, Tonya Gurr of Reno; and granddaughter Mary O'Malley of Reno. He is also survived by his loving sister, Florence (Gurr) Gunn and brother-in-law Donald Gunn of San Diego, CA.

He was preceded in death by his father, Edward Gurr; mother Mae (Jackson) Gurr; three brothers; and one sister.

Darrell would have been one of the first to say he would be at the reunion. He has been trying to get everyone together for a couple of years. Darrell you will be missed.

Darrell was such a sweet guy.  We had gotten in touch in the last few years and exchanged a few e-mails.  I just remember him as rather quiet (maybe that was just with the girls) and very kind.  He seems to have had a rather adventurous life, lots of traveling.  I'm glad he did.  I'm sorry we'd lost touch for so long, I'd love to have heard more of his stories.

Here is a note Darrell sent me a few years ago

Hello Jim Taylor,
Remember me....Troop 400.  Hope this note finds you ok.  I reunite with Jim Bailie a couple years back.  He is still a gentleman and a great guy.  I live in Fernley, NV near Reno.  Are you still in Texas.  I've slowed a bit since 5 bypasses in 2001 and a broken kneck in '05 but am still ticking.  My closest friend over the past 50 years is Ralph Rizzo.  He is an attorney in Belmont, CA.  I just spent the night at his home in Half Moon Bay.  He lives ona golf course right on the ocean.  I do a multitude of things since I quit teaching years ago.  I have been a private Investigator and Bounty Hunter for almost thirty years.  I am also an importer of fruits & vegetables, and cigars.  I don't smoke them, just sell them..  Hope to hear from you.

Thanks Jim for posting that note you received from Darrell.  We all wish he could be with us at the reunion.  As Frank said Darrell would have been the first to sign up.  He so wanted to have a class reunion.  May he rest in peace.  Martha Egdorf Pegueros
